Short Creek is unlike any place I have ever been. It’s like the fringe of the Wild West, which is fitting because they used to film so many westerns in the area. Collin Serigne and William Casey joined me to meet with various community members, ate at every local restaurant, drank from a Mountain spring that one resident described as a portal, and was welcomed by everyone we met. While driving there, we speculated about polygamy and the spell Warren Jeffs once had over the community as if this were still going on. I think sometimes it’s tough to separate the past from the present because of the baggage we carry. We were so wrong. There is a great story about these people who used every resource they had to reclaim their town from a tyrant prophet, many of whom were excommunicated and intimidated but chose to come back and fight for their homes.
